Maa Kushmanda mantra translation:
“Praised be you fulfiller of wishes and desires who is adorned with crescent of the moon. Riding a brave tiger in awe with her eight hands such is Kushmanda.”
Description
Maa Kushmanda is the 4th form of the Mother Goddess Durga and is venerated on the 4th day of the Navratri festival. On this day, people should perform Durga Puja with a pure and calm mind.
The Sanskrit word ”Kushmanda” is made of 3 other words that are “Ku + Ushma + Amnda.” Here “Ku” represents “Little”, “Ushma” represents “Warmth or Energy” and “Anda” represents “Egg,” translating as the one who created the universe as “Little Cosmic Egg” with the energy of Her divine smile, is called “Kushmanda”.
The other famous names of the Goddess are “Adiswarup”, “Adishakti” and ”Ashtabhujadhari Devi” or “Ashtabhuja Devi.”
It is acknowledged that the Goddess created the entire creation, which is called ”Brahmanda” in Sanskrit, by just flashing Her smile. In addition, She loves Bali of white pumpkin known as ”Kushmanda.”
The Goddess dwells in the abode of the Sun God. That is why Maa Kushmanda’s splendor is as brilliant as the sun itself. All the beings of creation derive power from Her.
Legend
It is considered that when the creation did not exist, there was complete darkness everywhere. Then, the Goddess smiled and darkness was eliminated. Therefore, She is believed to have created this universe with Her divine smile.
Iconography
The Goddess is often portrayed as having 8 arms and riding on a tiger or lion, that signifies “Dharma”. Furthermore, She carries a jar of nectar, which represents prasada for bhaktas health and long life.
She also holds a rosary in one hand, which represents Her blessings of the devotees with Navniddhis (wealth) and Ashtasiddhis (wisdom).

She is the bestower of all pleasures. Her worship and adoration delivers a devotee from all types of ailments and leads him on the right path of pleasures and prosperity. Thus, an individual should worship and adore Her with a purified intellect and mind.
Moreover, Kushmanda puja during Navratri festival increases one’s strength and health and the practitioner gets freedom from all types of fears.
She represents Anahata (heart) chakra in spiritual practice. The literal Sanskrit translation of “Anahata” is “unstuck, unhurt, or unbeaten.” When in balance, an open Anahata chakra displays acceptance in others, yourself and life.
