Mantra lyrics:
”Sinhasangata nityam padmashritkardvya , Shubhdastu sada Devi Skandmata Yashswini.”
Devi Skandamata mantra translation:
”Skandmata, who rides on Lion with Kartikeya, holds a lotus in Her two hands and Varmudra in one hand, be propitious to me.”
Description
Maa Skandamata is the 5th form of Goddess Durga, Mother of the Universe.
It is the Goddess Durga aspect of a Mother. When Goddess Parvati became the Mother of Lord Skanda (also known as Lord Kartikeya), She received the name Skandamata.
The Sanskrit word ”Mata” translates as ”mother,” therefore ”Skandamata” literally translates as ”mother of Kartikeya or Skanda.”
She is also called the ”Goddess with a lotus-seat” and the “Goddess of Fire.”
The Goddess is the daughter of Himalaya and wife of lord Shiva (The Auspicious One).
Legend
The Gods had given Lord Kartikeya special weapons and powers, and Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati encouraged Lord Kartikeya to kill Tarakasur (a powerful asura – demon and the son of Vajranaka) on the battlefield.
Before Lord Kartikeya left for the great battle, Goddess Parvati transformed herself as Mother Durga again to bless Kartikeya. With Goddess Durga’s blessings, Kartikeya killed the demon Tarakasur and his army. Lord Kartikeya was made the commander-in-chief by the Gods.
Iconography
She is depicted in golden color and seated on a lotus flower. The Goddess has 3 eyes and 4 hands. The left lower hand, which is raised, holds a lotus and in the left upper arm is in a pose to grant a boon. She holds Lord Kartikeya in Her right upper arm and a magical lotus flower in Her right lower hand, which is slightly raised upward. The Lion is Her vehicle.
Day five Navratri mantra chanting benefits:
The veneration of Skandamaata purifies the heart of the practitioner. If a devotee adores the Goddess devoid of selfishness, the Mother will bless him with prosperity and power. She also possesses the brilliance of the sun and fulfills all the aspirations of Her followers.
Moreover, it is considered that devotees enter in Vishuddha (throat) chakra during the fifth day of Durga Puja. Vishuddha chakra is known as the purification center, where the nectar amrita drips down from the Bindu chakra and is split into a poison and a pure form. In this energy vortex, all the elements of the lower chakras – water, earth, fire and air – are refined to their purest essence and dissolve into akasha (ether).
