Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu mantra complete lyrics:

„Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru devo Maheshwara,
Guru sakshat, param Brahma, tasmai shri guravay namah.”

Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu mantra translation in English:

„The guru is the creator, the guru is the preserver, and the guru is the destroyer. The guru is the absolute. I bow before you.”

This mantra is a Sanskrit spiritual chant, chanted in praise of the Trimurti, that is, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The cosmic functions of creation, maintenance and destruction are personified by these 3 forms – Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver or Maintainer) and Shiva (the Transformer or Destroyer). These 3 personae are thought to represent different modalities of the one supreme divinity. In this manner, the Trimurti is similar to some interpretations of the Christian Trinity such as Sabellianism.

The concept of a divine triad is rooted in the earliest Hindu beliefs, which were largely fashioned by man’s reaction to nature: fear and reverence, for there was no means of controlling it. As a result, he personified natural phenomena and worshiped them.

The earliest triad comprised of Mitra, Varuna and Aryaman, representing the basic aspects of nature like the night and day, sky and earth. As new concepts replaced older ones, this Triad gave way to another, of Agni, Vayu and Surya. Later Indra replaced Vayu as a member of this highest order.

The specific Hindu gods that combined to make the Trimurti (Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva) each have their own origins in Hindu mythology, folklore and scripture. Nevertheless, how they came together in a single iconographic representation is still a source of scholarly interest.

Iconographic representations of the Trimurti first appear around the latter half of the first millennium of the common era. For example, the illustrious image of the Trimurti statue found on Elephanta island (near Mumbai, India) was carved during the 8th to 10th century. This sculpture has been attributed the imperial Rashtrakutas of Manyakheta (in present times Karnataka), who ruled the southern and the central parts of India this time period, and used the image of the 3 Gods as their insignia. In this particular image, Lord Shiva is depicted as manifesting all 3 aspects of the Godhead.

Researchers consider the doctrine of the trimurti to be an attempt to reconcile different approaches to the divine with each other and with the philosophical doctrine of ultimate reality (brahman).
