This is a powerful mantra to handle the anxiety and fears we experience.

The mantra is in Gurmukhi and comes from the Sikh tradition. It is dedicated to Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

So mai visar na jaa-ee mantra for anxiety and depression lyrics:

”Thaapi-aa na jaa-ay keetaa na ho-ay.
Aapay aap niranjan so-ay.
Jin sayvi-aa tin paa-i-aa maan.
Naanak gaavee-ai gunee nidhaan.
Gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o.
Dukh parhar sukh ghar lai jaa-ay.
Gurmukh naada’n.
Gurmukh vayda’n.
Gurmukh rai-aa-samaa-ee.
Gur eesar gur gorakh barmaa.
Gur paarbatee maa-ee.
Jay ha-o jaanaa aakhaa naahee.
Kahnaa kathan ha jaa-ee.
Guraa ik dahi buijaa-ee.
Sabhnaa jee-aa kaa ik daataa.
So mai visar na jaa-ee!”

Mantra translation in English:

”Unborn, Unmade, Himself alone,
The pure one.
Serve that One and gain glory in this world.
O Nanak! Sing of the treasure of excellence.
Sing and listen, keep love in your mind. Pain will fly away.
And peace will come to your home.
From the Gurmukh comes the Naad.
From the Gurmukh comes knowledge.
Through the Gurmukh we stay merged.
The Guru is the from of God.
That you can meditate on, imagine, and love.
The Guru is mother, Maya.
When I know it I can’t say it, Words are useless.
The Guru has given me one understanding.
All souls are gifts of the One.
May I never forget Him!”

More information

Depression affects nearly 17 million Americans annually and a large portion of these people take antidepressant drugs daily. While these drugs have been shown to help those with moderate to severe depression, they are frequently less effective for those with mild depression.

Depression, like most mental and physical illnesses, is multifactorial and requires a global investigation of your whole health, not just your body and mind, but your work, your relationships, your financial picture, your environment, how you express yourself creatively, and whether you’re letting your higher self shine.

Treating depression doesn’t have to mean hours of counseling or days fueled by medications. Those methods can be effective but with certain side effects. However, you may prefer a more traditional method to boost your mood; you can practice this mantra daily, helping you to relieve depression and anxiety symptoms.

Other ways to treat depression

Physical exercise releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins improve natural immunity and reduce the perception of pain. Also, endorphins may also serve to improve mood.

Acupuncture works on the principle of stimulating points in the body to correct imbalances in the flow of prana through channels known as meridians. Acupuncture activates your organism’s own potential to achieve its curative effect. As a result, it does not produce adverse effects which you are likely to experience when on antidepressants.

Yoga postures can help achieve a healthy and happy mind and body. By reducing anxiety and perceived stress, yoga appears to modulate stress response systems. Hence, it decreases physiological arousal — for instance, lowering blood pressure, reducing the heart rate, and easing respiration.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Due to the fact that depression is related to low levels of serotonin and inflammation in the body, plant-based foods naturally lower inflammation in the body because they are naturally high in antioxidants and low in fat. Furthermore, high vegetable intake increases the amount of B vitamins in the diet, which have been found to affect mood.

Note

Meditation’s effects on mood are also well documented. Settling your mind and living in the present moment can lift your mood, in addition to a whole host of other mind and physical body health benefits.
